A Passion for Photography
Aided by iPad Pro, Apple SIM and GigSky
My name is John Cahill and I recently entered a photo in a GigSky contest. I was humbled to be asked by the GigSky team if I’d like to share my photography in a guest blog post. While traveling, I used and IPad Pro with Apple SIM and GigSky mobile data.
First, I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a 3rd year pre-med student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and plan on attending medical school. I deeply enjoy traveling to new places! As a very young child, I quickly developed an interest in photography, not only because I was fascinated with the inner workings of digital cameras (which, at the time, were just becoming commercially available), but also because photography allowed me to creatively experiment with perspective. I have continued to develop my skills as a photography hobbyist and, this past December, I had the opportunity share some of my most recent work from Aruba with the GigSky team!
Eliminate High Roaming fees
My photography was greatly facilitated while I traveled through Aruba by the GigSky Network. Before discovering GigSky, I was put off by outrageous international roaming fees, which, as a hobbyist, meant that I completely disconnected from the mobile cellular network and lost touch with my friends and family while abroad. This meant that I had no access to my e-mail, text messages, Google Maps, and the internet when I needed it the most!
GigSky is easy to set-up on iPad Pro
This year, upon landing in Aruba, I powered-up my iPad Pro and created an account with GigSky within minutes. I was a bit skeptical, since cellular data on Aruba’s home network, SETAR, is very expensive and poorly explained. However, GigSky offered me 1 GB of data (valid for 30 days) for a flat fee, with no overages possible or vague conditions. Additionally, it was compatible with my Apple SIM card so there was no trip to the local SETAR store to activate my plan. Therefore, I jumped at the opportunity and signed up for the GigSky plan.
For my week-long trip in Aruba, I traveled with my Canon 50D, equipped with a 100mm Macro IS lens, and my iPad Pro, connected to the GigSky network. I was able to search the internet, receive turn-by-turn navigation while driving, and send my family and friends my latest pictures throughout the week. It was a pleasant surprise and made exploring the unknown regions of Aruba much more comfortable, since I knew I could guide myself back home using GPS, if I got lost.
Use iPad as a Mobile Hotspot!
One of my favorite features is the ability to use my iPad as a mobile hotspot. Although I conserved as much data as possible throughout the trip, the hotel’s wifi was broken for my entire stay. So, when it was time to check-in for my flight home, I flipped my hotspot on and quickly got my boarding pass. If I had not had the GigSky data plan, I would not have been able to check in for my flight until I arrived at the airport the following day!
No overage fees, No risk of billshock
With their pre-paid data plans, there is no risk of data overage fees once your data limit is reached. For me, the peace-of-mind of knowing that my bank account wouldn’t be drained by unexpected overage charges, placed GigSky well above local SIM card alternatives and my home carrier’s international data plans (e.g. AT&T’s 800 MB for $120.00).
How Affordable is GigSky?
In total, GigSky’s 1 GB plan cost me $50.00 USD and was valid for 30 days. (now 2GB for $50 on multi-country Caribbean Plan) This was a bargain compared to the AT&T plan I mentioned! In total, I used nearly 900 MB of data, just under my 1024 MB (1 GB) data cap. I did switch off cellular data services to unnecessary apps on my iPad, until the last day! Just before my flight (~600 MB of 1024 MB consumed) I splurged and opened up Facebook to upload my pictures, which brought my plan usage to ~900 MB on the runway!
How Much Data is Enough?
To ease anyones’ doubts, 1 GB is quite sufficient for a 10 day trip abroad, as long as you monitor your usage and disable unnecessary background refreshes (e.g. do you absolutely need to know that it is snowing back at home when you’re tanning in Aruba!)
Thank you again for taking the time to appreciate my photography. I sincerely hope that you will discover the extremely versatile applications of a GigSky plan on your next trip abroad! Go ahead – explore the unknown and share your journey with GigSky!
