As much as we may communicate with our relatives over social media, it can be a real challenge to put down our devices and communicate face-to-face over the holidays. Messaging and Facebook allow us to use emoticons to express rather complex emotions in a facile way – it’s so easy to show appreciation, love, excitement, approval with emoticons – and it’s so fast. We identify our feelings in those symbols, but face-to-face, our feelings are sometimes harder to express, not quite so clear or can’t be boiled down to a happy face or heart symbol.
Eyes Up, Devices Down
No one said in-person relating was as easy as dashing off a text, or attaching a few emoticons to your Facebook post–but, take heart and put your devices down because soon enough you’ll be apart again, and wishing you’d made more of a connection.
What if you can’t be with family and friends for the holidays?
This is when our mobile devices are a real plus. When separated from the people we love, we want to share holiday photos, warm messages and feel close, despite the distance. Here are some quick ways to make your mobile holiday communications a little more special than everyday messaging or posting:
This app creates not just e-cards but also movies–perfect for all occasions, whether they are holidays, birthdays, Thanksgiving, or just saying “I miss you” and “I love you” just to let your special someone know how much he or she really means to you. It’s a fun and easy way to create animated movies starring your family and friends. Use photos of your friend’s face on the animated character. You can also post your movies on YouTube and Facebook, or email them to your friends. Customize your movie with the many different backgrounds to choose from and a variety of sound effects.
What better way to feel connected to those close than watching a childhood classic – Peanuts! With the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving app, you can sift through the entire library of Peanuts classics, sending your favorite episodes to family members across the country, or continent. If you’re a Snoopy fan, and Charlie Brown remains a strong family tradition, this is a must have app over Thanksgiving weekend.
PicsArt takes photo editing to another, decorative level. Instead of simply throwing on a filter and sharing photos with friends, this app allows you to cut, drag and drop, shoot dramatic footage, and customize your photos to truly capture the important moments this Thanksgiving. Holiday frames, and fun tools allow you to build high quality imagery that’s sure to melt your recipient’s heart.
Last but not least, for that special someone who is lucky enough to be home Thanksgiving weekend, check out Pocket. Perhaps you find a funny article or you’re caught browsing on your phone too long – escape the wrath of family disapproval, and quickly tap the screen to save your findings for later. Instead of going back in your web browser and mulling over bookmarks, Pocket saves your content in a cool looking, visual timeline. Beats missing out on the family fun, and lets you take time to laugh about that funny article later.
Wishing you all and happy and fun Thanksgiving!
