Beautiful Heights – The Italian Alps
Travel often includes a lot of sitting in planes or trains and visiting monuments and museums. Wonderful – but sometimes we crave a more active vacation that will bring us close to nature, get our bodies moving, inspire and recharge us. GigSky customer, Stefano Negri, hiked the Italian Alps last summer and sent us the photo at the end of this post. He was en route to The Pizzini Refuge or “Rifugio Pizzini”, located 2,706m above sea level, at the head of the Cedèc Valley (above Santa Caterina). The refuge stands on a grassy outcrop of a beautiful enclosed to the north by the massive Königsspitze, to the east by the Cevedale Glacier and to the west to by the graceful pyramid of Pizzo Tresero.
After a day on the trails – a sauna, perhaps?
The Pizzini Refuge or “Rifugio Pizzini”, is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers and skiers. Not only does the rustic refuge have a bar and a restaurant, it also has a sauna! The dramatic backdrop of stunningly beautiful mountain peaks provides an idyllic setting to meet up with international travelers, share stories and a meal. At night, the skies are blanketed with such an abundance of stars, it renews a sense of wonder and awe that is often depleted by our busy city lives.
One Family – 3 Generations
Rifugio Pizzini is open from March to September and accommodates about 100 visitors. The Compagnoni family has been managing the refuge for three generations. Until 1970, the place was run Grandfather Filippo, born in 1910, a veteran mountain guide and ski instructor. His son Luigi, and wife Lucia, then took over and now their children -ski instructors Claudio and Mauro are in charge. It almost like going back to camp experiences we had as kids – that sense of freedom and adventure, camaraderie and fun, in a spectacular outdoor environment.

History buffs may want to read up on the area; it was a theater of battle between Austrian and Italian troops during WWI.
