Apple SIM: Where to Buy, How to Use

One of the most common questions we get at GigSky is "where can I buy an Apple SIM?"

Apple SIM is a nano-SIM card that allows you to activate cellular data plans right from your iPad. You can easily select a cellular data plan from carrier partners like AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, or GigSky for international data service. We’ve got you covered in 140+ countries and territories.

If you didn’t get an Apple SIM card with your iPad, you can purchase an Apple SIM kit in the U.S. at Apple retail stores. I bought mine last year for $4.99. They’re not always out on display, so you may need to ask. Apple SIM kits are also available at Apple Retail Stores in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Which devices work with Apple SIM?

Find out which iPad model you have and make sure that it works with an Apple SIM.

Apple generally ships the following U.S. iPad models with Apple SIM:

  • iPad Pro (12.9-inch) Wi-Fi + Cellular model

  • iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular model

  • iPad mini 3 or later Wi-Fi + Cellular model

What about Embedded SIM?

The iPad Pro (9.7-inch) Wi-Fi + Cellular model comes with an embedded Apple SIM.

These iPad models come with an embedded Apple SIM – it’s built right into the iPad:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular model

  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular model

  • iPad Pro (9.7-inch) Wi-Fi + Cellular model

Embedded SIMs can’t be removed. These iPads have a nano-SIM tray that works with a carrier SIM card. We recommend you purchase your iPad directly from Apple. If you buy this iPad from a carrier, the embedded Apple SIM might be locked to that carrier or disabled. However, the SIM tray does remain unlocked, so you can use it with SIM cards from other carriers.

Traveling with iPhone and iPad?

If you travel with an iPhone and an iPad, it can be helpful to have data plans from different carriers on each device. For example, there may be areas where your iPhone’s cellular provider has dead spots or poor coverage, but if you have a data plan from a different provider on your iPad, you may be able to access service. GigSky has global 3G/4G mobile data plans that you can activate as-needed, right on your iPad. This is especially important if you need to use navigation, or need data to stay current with work email, and can’t access service on your iPhone. GigSky on-demand, a la carte data plans make it easy to purchase data on the go for the duration of time best suited to your needs. Skip the headache of paying for yearly subscriptions, contracts and potentially throttled data. GigSky pricing is totally transparent. You can view the cost of data plans upfront – never pay extra charges or hidden fees, and no throttling!
