Think free unlimited data in Thailand sounds too good to be true? Here’s exactly how your eligible Visa card unlocks it.

Arriving in Thailand with unlimited data you didn't have to pay for sounds too good to be true. But Visa made this possible, in partnership with a company called GigSky.

So when you land in Bangkok or step off the plane in Phuket, you won't need to find a Wi-Fi password, wait in a SIM card line, or pay a per-day roaming rate just to pull up Google Maps.

If you have an eligible Visa card, you're entitled to up to 7 days of unlimited data in Thailand, at no cost, making this Thailand eSIM benefit one of the most underused travel perks out there.

Frequent travelers are now downloading the GigSky app before their Thailand trip and arriving already connected, on networks like AIS, DTAC, TriNet, and TrueMove, all supporting 4G and 5G across the country.

This is what the Visa Destinations benefit is, and this is how you claim it.

First, What Is This Benefit?

Visa partnered with GigSky to offer eligible cardholders complimentary data in select destinations, including Thailand, the UK, France, the UAE, and the 2026 World Cup host countries.

GigSky is an eSIM provider founded in 2010. When Apple launched the first eSIM-compatible iPhone, the iPhone XS, GigSky was already integrated into the ecosystem, invited by Apple to help shape the eSIM standard.

This isn't a promotion or a trial with strings attached. It's a travel benefit, the same category as airport lounge access or travel insurance, built into your Visa card. The amount you get depends on which type of card you carry.

Visa Infinite cardholders, including Canadian Visa Infinite Privilege, get 7 days of unlimited data plus 30% off any additional plans you need after that.

All other eligible Visa consumer and commercial cards, including debit and prepaid, get 3 days of unlimited data plus 20% off additional plans. No annual caps. No application required. Just a quick eligibility check, once.

What "Unlimited" Means for Thailand

This is probably the first thing you're wondering about, and it's a fair one.

Unlimited plans in the eSIM in Thailand market vary a lot. Some throttle after 500MB. Others give you 1-2GB of full speed before dropping you to near-unusable speeds.

The GigSky Visa Destinations plan for Thailand gives you 3.5GB of high-speed data per day. Once you hit that daily cap, speeds slow until the 24-hour window resets.

For most travelers doing maps, messaging, rideshares, social media, and video calls home, 3.5GB per day is more than enough.

That's the highest daily high-speed cap among unlimited options, and a big reason GigSky is considered the best eSIM for Thailand by frequent visitors to the region.

Coverage runs across AIS, DTAC, TriNet, and TrueMove, automatically. Your phone connects to whichever of those networks is strongest wherever you are, whether that's central Bangkok, a beach in Koh Samui, the hills around Chiang Mai, or the ferry to Koh Phangan.

Because GigSky operates as a mobile virtual network operator rather than a reseller, it manages those carrier relationships directly. That matters in places where a single carrier's signal gets patchy.

Is This Free? What's the Catch?

No hidden charges. No auto-billing after 7 days. No ad-watching or data sharing.

When you tap the Visa banner inside the GigSky app, you'll be asked to enter your card number. That step confirms your eligibility. Your card is not charged. There's no pre-authorization.

Once the check clears, your benefit appears and you redeem it whenever you're ready before your trip. For anyone who's ever paid inflated rates for an eSIM in Thailand, this is a different experience.

What happens at the end of your free days? You get a notification when you're close to using up your data, and you decide from there.

If you want to extend, you can buy a paid plan at your card's discount rate, 20% or 30% off, depending on your card tier. That's it. No lock-in, no surprise charges.

How to Claim Your Benefit Before Your Flight

The process takes a few minutes and you only need to do it once. After the initial check, your discount and future benefits are tied to your card permanently, as long as you remain an eligible cardholder.

  1. Download the GigSky app on your phone.
  2. Tap the Visa banner inside the app.
  3. Enter your Visa card number to confirm eligibility.
  4. Once confirmed, your available benefits appear. Redeem them before your trip.

One important note on timing: install your eSIM Thailand on the day you depart, while you still have a strong connection at home.

That way the setup completes without issues and you arrive in Thailand already connected, even before you leave the plane.

GigSky auto-connects to the strongest available local network without any manual settings on your end, no APN changes, no toggling between profiles.

Before you start, just check two things: your phone is unlocked, and your phone supports eSIM

Both take under five minutes to verify. Most iPhones from the XS onward and many recent Android models are eSIM compatible.

What This Plan Covers

Data only, which handles the majority of what you actually need in Thailand. WhatsApp calls and FaceTime work fine through data.

Grab, Google Maps, hotel check-ins, translation apps, Instagram, all of it runs on your Thailand eSIM data plan.

Hotspot is supported, so if you're traveling with someone who needs connectivity, you can share from your phone.

The plan covers the entire country. Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pai, the Gulf of Thailand islands, the Andaman coast.

There's no zone system or city restriction. Wherever your itinerary takes you in Thailand, the benefit covers it.

If Your Trip Is Longer Than 7 Days

Most Thailand trips run longer than a week. That's worth planning around.

If you have a Visa Infinite card, you get 7 days of unlimited data, which covers a solid portion of a typical 10-14 day trip. If you're on a standard eligible Visa, you get 3 days.

Either way, once your free days run out, your card discount applies automatically to any plan you purchase through GigSky

You're not starting from scratch with an unfamiliar provider. You've already tested the network, confirmed the coverage works for your specific destinations, and you know the setup is solid. That makes extending your Thailand eSIM plan a much easier decision.

GigSky also covers 200+ countries and 290+ cruise ships globally. If Thailand is one stop in a longer trip, your discount carries through every additional plan you buy, for land destinations and maritime routes alike.
