Cruise Internet for Canadians: Bell, Rogers, Telus or a $44 GigSky eSIM?

July 8, 2025

So, you’ve booked a last-minute cruise deal from Canada, or maybe you’re still comparing the best last-minute cruise deals Canada has to offer.

Either way, as you start planning your suitcase and excursions, there’s one big thing to figure out before you board: how will you stay connected, without paying a small fortune?

If you're wondering, does a cruise ship have WiFi? The answer is yes, but if the ship’s Wi-Fi is out of your budget, or you’re trying to find the cheapest internet plan, don’t worry. You’ve got options.

The challenge? On a cruise, you're technically between countries.

You drift out of Wi-Fi zones, sail through international waters, and the moment you're off the coast, your phone starts hunting for a signal like it’s lost in the woods. And that can get expensive, fast (especially with a Canadian plan).

Going totally off-grid isn’t an option either. Your family expects daily check-ins. You want to message friends, post to social media, and use Google Maps when you're in port.

So how do you stay connected without the sky-high roaming bills?

Let’s break down your choices apart from Wi-Fi on cruise ships: GigSky, Bell, Rogers, and Telus. All solid in their own ways, but some more cruise-friendly than others.

Cruise eSIM Providers: GigSky vs Canadian Carriers
Provider Cruise Coverage Land Coverage Estimated 7-Day Cost
(Moderate Use)
Data Availability eSIM
GigSky Yes, data coverage starts 1h after the ship leaves port Yes (regional plans) From $34.99 to $44.99 (varies by region) Yes Yes
Bell Pay-per-use calls and texts With Roam Better $209.30 At port only No
Rogers Pay-per-use calls and texts With Roam Like Home $297.50 At port only No
Telus Pay-per-use calls and texts With Easy Roam From $103.25 to $234.50 At port only No

Best Overall: GigSky for Mobile Data at Sea and on Land

Let’s start with the option designed for cruise travellers: GigSky.

GigSky is an eSIM provider, a digital version of the traditional SIM card that’s integrated directly into your device. With no need for a physical card, it’s easy to activate a mobile data plan wherever you are, right from your phone or tablet.

One of GigSky’s offerings is its Cruise + Land eSIM plan, built for travelers who need connectivity at sea and at port. You can choose between Cruise-only or Cruise + Land options depending on how you plan to use your data.

How it works:

Your eSIM activates automatically one hour after your ship departs. While the ship is at sea, it connects via satellite-linked maritime networks. When you're docked or off the ship, it switches to nearby land-based cellular towers for coverage.

GigSky is compatible with 200+ cruise ships, including popular lines like Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, MSC, Norwegian, Princess, Royal Caribbean, and more.

If your cruise spans multiple countries, GigSky offers regional cruise plans and a global plan.

Open the GigSky app and choose the cruise region, whether that’s the Americas & Caribbean, Europe, Asia Pacific, or the Middle East. Both Cruise and Cruise + Land data plans are available for each.

Pricing & Duration Options:

For a 7-day cruise, 1 GB of data typically ranges from $34.99 to $44.99, depending on the region you choose.

Plans are available for 1, 7, 15, or 30 days, with data options from 512 MB to 10 GB.

Using a GigSky eSIM reduces mobile data costs by 70–80% compared to other options.

Important note on activation timing:

Plans activate as soon as you install the eSIM, so if your Cruise + Land plan includes Canada and you install it while still in Canada, you’ll start using data immediately.

To avoid accidentally starting your plan early, we recommend purchasing and installing the eSIM as close to your travel date as possible.

Who this is best for:

GigSky is a strong option for moderate usage at sea, like messaging, checking social media, or staying in touch with friends and family. If you need high-speed cruiser internet for remote work, this may not be the best fit, and you should consider alternatives.

Performance tips:

The connection is stable, but cruise ships have complex, metal-heavy structures that can interfere with signal strength in cabins. You'll get the best connectivity on open decks or in public areas.

✅Pros:
  • Seamless coverage at sea and on land
  • With GigSky, you reduce mobile data costs by 70% - 80%
  • Works with 200+ cruise ships
  • No physical SIM card required
  • Easy to purchase via app and your computer
❌Cons:
  • Data-only: no calls or SMS (VoIP apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime work fine)
  • Not ideal for heavy data use or remote work

Bell: Reliable Coverage at Port with Pay-Per-Use Rates at Sea

Bell’s Roam Better plan supports land roaming in many destinations, but doesn’t apply to cruise ships or in-flight networks.

Instead, calls and texts at sea are charged per use. On a 7-day cruise, moderate use, just five minutes of calls and ten texts per day, can total over $209.30.

While the plan works well on land and in port, Bell doesn’t currently offer a cruise-specific data plan, and onboard coverage is limited to voice and text only.

It’s a good fit if you just need light communication while docked.

But if you’re booking last minute deals for cruises, especially last minute cruise deals in Canada, it’s worth checking whether your carrier offers flexible roaming or cruise-specific connectivity in advance.

Rogers: Strong (but expensive) for Land Travel in Popular Destinations, But Pay-Per-Use at Sea

Rogers’ Roam Like Home is a popular option among Canadian travellers, especially for land-based travel to countries like the United States, France, and Italy.

With Roam Like Home, you pay a daily flat rate, $14/day for the U.S. and $16/day for international destinations like France and Italy.

These rates apply for up to 20 days per billing cycle, after which regular pay-per-use charges kick in.

This makes it fairly predictable and convenient for travellers spending extended time on land.

However, once you board a cruise ship and sail beyond port, Roam Like Home no longer applies. While at sea, Rogers shifts to pay-per-use billing.

For moderate use on a 7-day cruise, say, 5 minutes of calling and 10 texts per day, you’d spend roughly $297.50.

If you're browsing last minute deals for cruises, especially last minute cruise deals in Canada, keep in mind that traditional roaming plans like this don’t cover onboard connectivity.

Telus: Strong Coverage on Land, Voice-Only at Sea

Telus offers dependable roaming through Easy Roam, but cruise ships fall outside this plan.

While sailing, you're billed $7 per minute for calls and $0.75 per text, with no access to mobile data.

That means data services are fully blocked once offshore. A week’s worth of moderate use, calling home and sending a few messages daily, can reach $297.50.

Telus is a strong land-based solution, but cruise travellers looking for ongoing data access may need to search for alternatives.

And if you’re booking last minute deals for cruises, especially last minute cruise deals in Canada, it’s important to check what kind of connectivity you'll have at sea before you sail.
